DOWNSTREAM PROCESSING & BIOMATERIALEN |
Our research focuses on (1) sustainable process technology with the emphasis on development of greener and more sustainable processes and (2) on the production and use of biobased chemicals.
SUSTAINABLE PROCESS TECHNOLOGY
We have expertise in:
SUSTAINABLE PROCESS TECHNOLOGY
We have expertise in:
- Separation technology
- Advanced distillation technology for the separation of azeotropic mixtures
- Membrane filtration (micro-, ultra- and nanofiltration)
- Extraction of biobased chemicals from biomass
- Microreactor technology and flow chemistry
- Chemical reactions and separation processes on pilot scale
- Fysico-chemical analysis on insects, algae, growth media and residues
BIOBASED CHEMICALS
Our expertise in this domain is the successful extraction of fats/oils, chitine and proteins from insects such as the locust, black soldier fly and the house cricket and from microalgae. The extraction processes are developed at lab scale and can be raised to pilot scale amounts. A second research topic is the conversion of biobased chemicals by using chemical processes, e.g. the conversion of chitine to chitosan. Another example is the use of black soldier fly fats for the synthesis of amino-acyl surfactants. The following analyses on biobased chemicals are routinely performed:
